Real-Time Pilot Project (RTPP)

This is a former pilot project. Active 2001-2013

Real-Time Pilot Project (RTPP)

The RTPP is a former Pilot Project which is the precursor to the IGS Real-Time Service (RTS) (see Real-Time Service). In 2001, the Real-Time Working Group was formed with responsibility for real-time (RT) activities. In the second stage, the Real-Time Working Group initiated a pilot project with wide participation and excellent contributions from a number of organisations. The project timeline is shown below. On successful completion of the RTPP, the RTWG recommended to the IGS Governing Board its readiness to launch an operational service. The RTPP has successfully transitioned to the IGS Real Time Service in 2013.

Historical Background

2001
The IGS Real-Time Working Group (RTWG) was established in 2001 with the goal to design and implement real-time infrastructure and processes for the delivery of real-time data to analysis centres, and the dissemination of real-time products to users.
2002
The working group’s direction was set at the IGS workshop held in Ottawa in the spring of 2002, titled “Towards Real Time”. At that time, the design for a prototype real-time service was adopted.
2007
In June 2007, the IGS announced a Call for Participation in the IGS Real-Time Pilot Project with a three-year target to accomplish the following goals:
1. Manage and maintain a global IGS real-time GNSS tracking network,
2. Enhance and improve selected IGS products,
3. Generate new real-time products,
4. Investigate standards and formats for real-time data collection, data dissemination and delivery of derived products,
5. Monitor the integrity of IGS predicted orbits and the GNSS status,
6. Distribute observations and derived products to real-time users, and support Network DGPS/RTK operations,
7. Encourage cooperation among real-time activities, particularly in IGS densification areas.
2009
In 2009, the pilot project was extended to March 2011.
2011
In August 2011, the working group declared that the pilot project had reached the additional goal of Initial Operational Capability (IOC) and that it would be recommending to the IGS Governing Board the launch of an official Real-Time Service.
2013
The RTS was announced as operational in April 2013 with the release of a web site (www.igs.org/rts) containing links for user registration and extensive information on how to access the service.
